Recent cold snap

South Africa has been under the grip of a real cold winter season and this week saw heavy snow falls across all nine provinces. Evacuation were the order of the day as many areas were closed off for days. Helicopters were sent in on a number of rescue missions.

Kokstad, in the Kwazulu Natal province was also adversely affected by the sudden cold a area nornally associated with snow, was really bad this season.

Many people do not associated Africa with snow, but even areas like Johannesburg in the Gauteng province saw snow on the ground. This weekend the weather bureau issued several warnings of cold and wet condition with more snow expected in many of the high lying regions.
